“Ban the Box” Movement Says Fairer Hiring Process is in NJ’s Best Interests
If you have been charged and convicted of a crime in the State of New Jersey, it’s likely you will be facing fines, possible prison time and more. Proponents of a campaign, known as “Ban the Box NJ,” believe that all job applicants should be on a level playing field when being interviewed for a job. Simply put, the box often seen on job applications that requires one to admit to having been convicted a crime would be a thing of the past – if Ban the Box NJ is successful.
Assembly’s Law and Public Safety Committee is currently debating the issue. If passed, the law will require employers to conduct criminal background checks only after an applicant and been interviewed and offered employment. Backers of Ban the Box NJ believe this would make the hiring process fairer for all potential applicants.
Further, statistically speaking, recidivism is linked to unemployment. Therefore, it can easily be argued that employing people who have served their time may very well reduce the crime rate and lower costs for police throughout NJ.
