Acura’s Little-Publicized Transmission Recall

Another day, another recall – at least that’s what it seems like when you are reading the automotive section of any paper or website. Acura is the latest newsmaker in this category; the luxury car maker recently recalled cars with the new 2015 TLX Transmission. This automated transmission that is only available on Acura models.

The transmission in question is the 2015 TLX V6 SH-AWD transmission, manufactured by the world renowned ZF Friedrichshafen. Car enthusiasts will recall that Acura’s decision to go outside its own engineering circles for a major car part was highly unusual.

According to Acura, the faulty transmission can cause a “roll away” to occur when it’s in park. This in turn can cause an accident. Though there have been no accidents or deaths associated with the computerized glitch, Acura is still recalling all 2015 TLX V6 all-wheel drive cars that were made the faulty transmission out of concern for the safety of their drivers.

Approximately 50 percent of the new 2015 TLX SH-AWD Acuras that are hitting dealership lots already have the replacement transmission in their engines. People who have bought an Acura with a faulty transmission are encouraged to go to the nearest Acura dealership and ask for a replacement transmission. As one would expect, the replacement transmissions are free of charge for those who own the recalled model.

Acura has already arranged to notify owners of faulty transmissions via letter starting in early January. If you are unsure whether or not you were supposed to get a letter, you can also call up Acura’s customer service line to double-check. You can also contact the dealership in which you bought your car to find out if your car was affected by the recall. Either way, new Acura owners may want to find out whether or not they are affected sooner rather than later.
