A scathing piece on salon.com recently called attention to the ongoing struggle parents face to keep their kids safe from dangerous window blind cords. Over the last three decades, more than 300 children have been strangled by these cords while the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has not taken any real action. Thirty years ago, the agency acknowledged the danger these cords represent for young children, but have since done very little to solve the problem. Safety advocates have insisted that these blinds be made in such a way that they can be kept away from children.
According to Parents for Window Blind Safety, blind cords have killed 332 children, most of whom are under the age of two. Blinds cords have also caused injury, including brain damage and paralysis, to more than 160 other children. It can take less than 15 seconds for a child to be strangled by these cords.
The fact is that threats to our children’s safety are everywhere, from dangerous blind cords to defective toys and everything in between. If your child has been seriously hurt by a defective or shoddily crafted product, it is imperative that you call an experienced consumer protection attorney today to get justice.
With so many child-safety issues hidden in the products we use every day, it’s more important than ever to make sure your children are protected. The CPSC reports over 113,000 incidents with inflatable toys, 24,400 treadmill injuries and too many more threats to even count from products that are seemingly harmless and benign. As a society that values the safety of our children above all else, it’s still impossible to make sure our kids are 100 percent protected. The best we can do is shop carefully, watch them as closely as we can, and make sure manufacturers of defective goods are held accountable.
