Sometimes, as they say, it is worth fighting City Hall. Or, in this case, a business mammoth like AT&T. The Wireless giant agreed to pay $105 million in penalties and rebates to customers after it was discussed that the company unlawfully billed customers’ cell phone accounts.
Apparently, according to federal officials, AT&T Mobility, will pay $80 million to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for something called “mobile cramming.” In turned the FTC will provide refunds to customers who were victims of the mobile cramming – being overbilled for charges they never approved such as ringtones and texts. Additionally, the company will pay fees and penalties in the amount of $20 million to all 50 state and Washington DC, as well as another $5 million to the Federal Communication Commission (FCC).
The chairwoman of the FTC in a statement said: “This case underscores the important fact that basic consumer protections — including that consumers should not be billed for charges they did not authorize — are fully applicable in the mobile environment.”
The case came to light when AT&T customers began to complain that they were being charge around $9.99 for items they never wanted to purchase. Almost 40 percent of customers were, at some point, complaining about the erroneous charges.
